For the past ten months, two current Department of Homeland Security senior attorneys have been helping the partisan January 6 Select Committee investigate the riot at the United States Capitol, raising questions about conflicts of interest, and potential violations of the separation of powers and the Hatch Act.
Joe Maher, a “principal deputy general counsel” at DHS, and Bryan Bonner, the Deputy Chief Counsel for the TSA, a subagency of DHS, are both listed as committee detailees on the last page of the the committee’s April activity report. Both of the men have start dates in August of 2021 and end dates in August of 2022.
Maher, who has worked at DHS for almost two decades, reportedly became head of its Office of Intelligence and Analysis at the beginning of August 2020.
Critics say that office may have contributed to the massive security failures that resulted in chaos at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Matt Schlapp, chairman of CPAC, is calling for “a full public airing” of all the expenses and conflicts of interest in “this sham process.”
“This along with the coordinated indictments from a partisan DOJ is a clear violation of our constitutionally prescribed separate branches,” Schlapp said in a statement Thursday.
“The Pelosi Propaganda committee being secretly aided by the Biden administration shows it is all about Democrat politics. CPAC calls on a full public airing of all expenses and personnel aiding and abetting this sham process. Hatch Act violations should be considered for all administration officials involved,” he stated.
